Diwali sales are a common and highly anticipated retail event in India and other countries where Diwali is celebrated. These sales typically involve various retailers, both online and offline, offering discounts, promotions, and special deals on a wide range of products to attract shoppers during the festive season. Diwali sales often include items such as electronics, clothing, home decor, appliances, and more.

The year 2022 witnessed unprecedented festival shopping, breaking all the previous records, says a report. The country’s offline trade was generate approximately Rs 1.75 lakh crore in revenue during the Diwali holiday , an increase of more than 40% from the previous year ie Rs 1.25 lakh crore.

Buying from traditional artisans during Diwali can have several positive impacts on the environment and contribute to sustainability. Here are some reasons why supporting traditional artisans during Diwali can help save the planet:

Sustainable Production Methods: Traditional artisans often use eco-friendly and sustainable production methods. They rely on age-old techniques and materials that have a lower environmental impact compared to mass-produced, factory-made goods. This reduces the carbon footprint of the products.

Reduced Energy Consumption: Handcrafted products typically require less energy for production compared to large-scale manufacturing processes. This can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption.

Preservation of Cultural Heritage: Purchasing traditional handmade products helps preserve cultural heritage and indigenous knowledge. This encourages the continuation of traditional crafts and skills, which can be ecologically sound and respectful of the environment.

Promotes Local Economies: Supporting traditional artisans helps boost local economies, which can have positive effects on the environment. When artisans thrive, it can lead to improved living conditions and less pressure on natural resources.

Fewer Harmful Chemicals: Many mass-produced products involve the use of harmful chemicals and synthetic materials, which can be detrimental to the environment. Traditional artisans often use natural, biodegradable, and non-toxic materials.

Reduces Waste: Handmade products are often created with a focus on quality and durability, which can result in less waste compared to disposable, low-quality goods. This is in line with the principles of reducing, reusing, and recycling.

Supports Sustainable Agriculture: Traditional artisans may source their materials locally, supporting sustainable agriculture and reducing the environmental impact of transportation and long supply chains.

Encourages Conscious Consumption: By choosing traditional artisan-made products, consumers are encouraged to think more consciously about their purchases, which can lead to reduced overconsumption and waste.

Promotes Fair Trade Practices: Many traditional artisan products are produced through fair trade practices, which ensure that artisans receive fair wages and working conditions. This can help reduce exploitation and inequality.

Connection to Nature: Traditional artisans often have a close connection to nature and use natural materials. This connection can inspire a sense of respect for the environment and the importance of preserving it.

In summary, buying from traditional artisans during Diwali not only supports local communities and preserves cultural traditions but also aligns with environmentally friendly practices. This can contribute to the broader goal of saving the planet by reducing the ecological impact of consumer choices.
